Swami Tommy introduces the idea of santosha (contentment) in this podcast. Santosha arises from acceptance and appreciation of life AS IT IS, not having life the way we want it to be. Or trying to make life conform to our desires. Contentment is a byproduct of living life in alignment with your true purpose. That is the view of yoga ethics (yamas and niyamas).

Like a butterfly, when you chase happiness it flies away from you. Happiness is a gift. Not a thing to be hunted or sought after. This way of thinking about happiness contradicts the American cultural idea that we are entitled to happiness; that it is a right. The final version of the Declaration of Independence declares: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

If we all have the right to be happy, what happens when our happiness interferes in the happiness of others? Think about it.
